How to become a European STS Drone Pilot: Roadmap

In order to carry out drone operations efficiently and safely, it is essential to have the right training for each of the flight scenarios. Drone regulations have evolved rapidly in recent years, and there are now specific training requirements that operators must meet depending on the type of operation.



If you are aiming for the more advanced standard training, for example operational scenarios STS-01 and STS-02, you need to be trained in categories A1/A3. In addition, it is important that you familiarise yourself thoroughly with the drone manufacturer’s user manual, as this document contains essential information for the safe and efficient use of the equipment.

Training requirements associated with operational categories

Below is a detailed table summarising the different operational categories and the associated training requirements for each. This information will allow you to clearly visualise the certifications required for each type of operation, making it easier for you to plan your training:

The training required of remote pilots at this level is to be familiar with the instructions provided by the UAS manufacturer.
 A1·      C1·     The training required for remote pilots at this level is to be familiar with the instructions provided by the UAS manufacturer.

·     Pass an online A1/A3 theoretical knowledge training and test.
 A2·      C2·     The training required for remote pilots at this level is to be familiar with the instructions provided by the UAS manufacturer.

·     Pass an online A1/A3 theoretical knowledge training and test

·     Complete self-practical training in A3 operational conditions

·     Pass additional theoretical knowledge test.
 A3·      Be of private construction with an MTOM of up to 25 kg.

·      Have an MTOM ≥ 250 g, without class marking and have been placed on the market before 1 January 2024 (‘legacy’).

·      Carry class marking label C2, C3 or C4.
·     The training required for remote pilots at this level is to be familiar with the instructions provided by the UAS manufacturer.

·     Pass an online A1/A3 theoretical knowledge training and test.
SpecificSTS-01·      C5·     The training required for remote pilots at this level is to be familiar with the instructions provided by the UAS manufacturer.

·     Successful completion of an online A1/A3 theoretical knowledge training and test

·     Successful completion of the STS theoretical knowledge test

·     Practical training in standard scenario STS-01
 STS-02·      C6·     The training required for remote pilots at this level is to be familiar with the instructions provided by the UAS manufacturer.

·     Successful completion of an online A1/A3 theoretical knowledge training and test

·     Successful completion of the STS theoretical knowledge test

·     Practical training in standard scenario STS-02
