Validity of the STS Drone Pilot Certificate
Implementing Regulation (EU) 2019/947 on rules and procedures for the operation of unmanned aircraft lays down the basis for the training and certification of drone pilots in the specific category, including those operating under standard operational statements (STS-01 and STS-02).
STS Pilot Certificate Requirements
- A1/A3 Certificate (Open Category): This certificate is mandatory and provides the basic knowledge of the regulations, operational restrictions and fundamental responsibilities of UAS pilots.
- A2 Certificate (Optional): Although not a prerequisite, there are significant benefits to holding an A2 certificate. Those pilots who hold this certification will be able to access a simplified theory exam for the STS qualification, with a reduction in both the subjects to be assessed and the number of questions in the exam.

Validity and Renewal of the Certificate
The STS Pilot Certificate is valid for five years. During this period, pilots must keep up to date with regulations and good operating practices. To renew the certificate within its period of validity, one of the following conditions must be met:
(a) Demonstration of competence: This implies that the pilot must evidence that he/she maintains the level of skill and knowledge required to operate in this category.
(b) Refresher training: This consists of completing a specific course conducted by the competent authority or a designated entity. This type of training is designed to review and update key concepts necessary to operate safely and efficiently.
In the event that the certificate expires without being renewed, the pilot must repeat the entire process of obtaining the above mentioned.
