Flying a drone professionally is not just about take-off. A safe UAS operation begins before the first flight and ends after the last landing. This is where pre-flight and post-flight checklists become essential tools for any responsible remote pilot.
A checklist is a structured list of tasks that must be completed before, during, and after a flight. It serves as both a guide and a safeguard to ensure that no critical step is overlooked.
Even highly experienced remote pilots can miss steps if they rely solely on memory. A checklist helps prevent mistakes such as flying with incorrectly connected batteries or neglecting to check for interference.
Using checklists systematically increases operational safety, protects equipment, and minimises the risk of avoidable incidents.
A robust pre-flight checklist should cover the aircraft, the environment, and the pilot. Key elements include:
Inspect the physical condition of the UAS, propellers, and structural components.
Confirm that all batteries are fully charged, properly inserted, and free from damage.
Ensure that firmware is up to date and sensors are calibrated before departure.
Check airspace restrictions, NOTAMs, and geofencing zones relevant to your flight.
Verify that any required operational authorisations or local permits are in place.
Confirm that weather conditions and visibility are within safe operational limits.
Double-check the mission plan, waypoints, and emergency procedures.
Assess your physical and mental condition to confirm you are fit to fly.
Establish clear communication protocols with crew members or observers, if applicable.
The post-flight checklist is just as important as the pre-flight one. It ensures that the equipment is safe, data is secured, and the aircraft is ready for the next operation.
Check the aircraft for any visible damage or wear.
Power down systems in the correct order to avoid equipment stress.
Document any issues, incidents, or irregularities observed during the flight.
Securely transfer flight data, telemetry, and recorded material.
Store the aircraft, batteries, and accessories in safe and appropriate conditions.
Update the flight logbook with flight details, incidents, and maintenance notes.
At EU Drone Port, we provide a free pre-flight and post-flight checklist template tailored to European UAS operations.
