What can you do with a European STS Drone Pilot Certificate

Since the entry into force of the European regulatory framework for UAS (Unmanned Aircraft Systems), the STS certificate (Standard Scenario) has become one of the most important qualifications for professional drone pilots. But what exactly does this certificate allow you to do, and why is it so relevant? In this article, we explain it clearly and with a practical focus.

What is the STS Certificate?

The STS certificate is an official accreditation recognised in all Member States of the European Union Aviation Safety Agency (EASA). It authorises a remote pilot to conduct operations under the European Standard Scenarios, specifically:

  • STS-01: VLOS (Visual Line of Sight) operations over a controlled ground area in a populated environment using class C5 UAS.

  • STS-02: BVLOS (Beyond Visual Line of Sight) operations with airspace observers over a controlled ground area in a sparsely populated environment using class C6 UAS.

Both scenarios are designed to enable complex operations without the need to obtain a specific operational authorisation, provided that the technical and operational requirements are met.

What can you do with this certificate?

  1. Operate drones across the European Union

The STS certificate is cross-border valid, meaning you can carry out professional UAS operations in any EASA Member State without having to retake exams or apply for recognition of qualifications.

  2. Reduce administrative burdenWhen operating under the STS framework, no prior authorisation is required for each individual mission. It is sufficient to submit an operator declaration to the national aviation authority. This significantly streamlines regular or multi-site operations.

  3. Enhance your professional profile The STS certificate demonstrates that you have advanced training and are familiar with standardised operational procedures under European law. This is key to:

    • Accessing public tenders or regulated projects
    • Working with recognised UAS operators or multinational companies
    • Launching your own professional activity as a qualified UAS operator
