FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS

FAQs about Drone Certification

Below you’ll find the most frequently asked questions we receive as a Notified Body regarding drone class certification, regulatory compliance, and the benefits of obtaining a CX label.

Any world manufacturer, distributor, or importer placing a drone on the EU market.

By obtaining this certification, you ensure that your drones comply with Delegated Regulation (EU) 2019/945 and are ready to be operated legally within the EU.

This also adds clear commercial value to your product. Certified drones can be flown immediately by your customers under the applicable EASA scenarios, making your product more attractive and easier to integrate into professional operations.

A successful certification allows you to affix the corresponding class identification label (e.g., C0, C1, C2, etc., C6) to your drone, packaging, and user manual. This label confirms full compliance with the technical and safety requirements defined by EU law.

For your clients, this means the drone is ready to operate immediately within specific EASA flight scenarioswithout additional approvals. Offering certified drones helps streamline adoption, builds trust, and gives you a competitive edge in a compliance-driven market.

The certification process typically takes 4 to 6 weeks, depending on how complete your technical documentation is and whether additional testing is required.

Pricing ranges from €9,000 to €25,000, based on the drone class, complexity of the system, and the number of payloads & accessories you want to include.

The EU-Type Examination Certificate remains valid for 10 years, as long as the drone’s hardware and software remain unchanged, and the applicable regulations are not modified in a way that affects compliance. If changes occur, the certification must be reviewed and updated accordingly.

This provides long-term stability for your product in the European market. A certified drone is not only compliant at launch — it’s a lasting investment in regulatory confidence and operational readiness for your clients.

A drone is considered “legacy” if it was placed on the EU market before 1 January 2024 and does not carry a class identification label (C0 to C6). These drones may continue operating under transitional rules, but they come with a major restriction: they cannot be updated, neither in hardware nor software.

Any modification — even a firmware update — may be considered a significant change, requiring a new evaluation and certification. In practice, legacy drones are frozen in their original state, limiting functionality, support, and future market value.

Certifying your drone now ensures it can evolve with your product roadmap and remain legally operational in the years to come.
